History, Venues & Repertoire

Beginnings

RSCM Scottish Voices started with a Friday evening rehearsal, overnight stay, and Saturday rehearsal in the summer of 2008 at Strathallan School in Perthshire directed by Frikki Walker and accompanied by Richard Walmsley (for their biographies see elsewhere on this site).  After that initial meeting it was agreed that the choir had potential so in January 2009 we met again, this time in St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow where we rehearsed all day and sang a short Epiphany service at the end of it.  In March 2009 we gathered for a third time, this time in Dunblane Cathedral where we again rehearsed all day and finished with Choral Evensong.

Administrators

The initial administrator of our choir was in post for the Strathallan meeting, our first service in 2009 at St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow, and at the end of our second service at Dunblane Cathedral she resigned unexpectedly.

Frikki then approached Gary Young, a member of the choir who also sings in Frikki's Cathedral choir in Glasgow, and asked him to take over as administrator.  Although Gary had previously served for a time as the Secretary of Glasgow Chamber Choir his experience of the running of a choir of the nature of RSCM Scottish Voices was nil, however he accepted and rose to the challenge, in truth largely making things up as he went along albeit under the very light-touch oversight of the RSCM Scotland Committee and Alistair Warwick from whom he occasionally sought reassurance that what he was doing was acceptable and wouldn't bring RSCM into any disrepute!  Gary also drew greatly from the support of RSCM in Salisbury, who have always been very approachable, friendly, and helpful partners.

Under the leadership team of Frikki (music) and Gary (administration) the choir has gone from strength to strength musically and financially, being totally self-funding and with a healthy bank balance which allows us to consider taking part in services and events that cost us considerably more than usual to stage, whether that's because they're a longer distance away or that the venues levy higher charges for access. Perhaps the biggest tribute to the way Gary has run the choir is that some elements of his methods were adopted and adapted by RSCM Salisbury in the way the other, much longer established, RSCM Voices choirs are run.

In early 2018, after ten years in post, Gary decided that the time was right for him to step down and allow someone else to take the choir forward, and he resigned with effect from the end of the residential rehearsal weekend at the Scottish Police College in August 2018.

Chris Wilson, who sings in Dunblane Cathedral choir and who was for a time administrator of the now former RSCM Young Scottish Voices, takes over as choir administrator after the residential weekend.

Venues and music

Other than the service in Dunblane Cathedral in March 2009, the music list for which is missing (this was immediately prior to Gary being appointed as administrator and records prior to his time are unfortunately incomplete), what follows is essentially the history and repertoire of RSCM Scottish Voices, as it currently stands.  This page should be updated regularly, we'll try our best to remember!
